In 2011, our founder, Terri Atkinson, faced a turning point in her life. Struggling with depression and anxiety, she was withdrawing from the world, afraid to leave her home. But everything changed one September day when a local news story caught her attention.

The report detailed the heartbreaking conditions at a dog breeder’s facility, showing footage of dogs living in squalor. Amid the chaos, a tiny Shih Tzu’s face appeared on the screen—terrified, neglected, and in desperate need of care. Something deep inside Terri stirred. She knew she had to help. Days later, that little dog, named Princess Reagan Marie, became part of Terri’s family.

Reagan wasn’t just a rescue; she was a lifesaver. Terri, a lifelong animal lover, found hope and purpose through her new companion. Soon after adopting Reagan, Terri was invited to volunteer as a foster mom for other dogs in need of care before they could find permanent homes. This experience sparked a profound transformation.

Terri started driving around Raleigh, meeting people, and dedicating herself to saving dogs. Her fear and isolation began to fade as her heart filled with a new mission. Today, she often says that Reagan rescued her just as much as she rescued Reagan.

Over the past decade, Terri and her husband, David, have poured their hearts into rescuing animals. They are drawn to the dogs who need the most care—those who are often overlooked due to age, illness, or disabilities. From dogs missing limbs, eyes, or ears, to those battling severe medical conditions, Terri and David have devoted thousands of hours to giving these animals a second chance.

Their journey has led them to create Rainbow Bridge Hospice Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing love, dignity, and care to senior and medically needy dogs. Whether it’s a neglected shelter pup, an abandoned senior dog, or a furry friend with special needs, our mission is clear: every dog deserves a chance to feel safe, loved, and valued.
